Modular flight training is the most flexible route to a professional pilot career. Unlike integrated programmes that require full-time commitment over 18 to 24 months, modular training allows you to complete each licence and rating individually, at your own pace. At alpaviation, we have built our entire training philosophy around this approach - because most people who want to fly also have careers, families, and lives that do not pause for a training programme.
What is modular training?
In modular training, the path to an ATPL(A) (Airline Transport Pilot Licence) is broken into distinct, self-contained modules. Each module - PPL(A), hour building, ATPL(A) theory, instrument rating, CPL(A), multi-engine - can be completed independently, with breaks between them if needed.
This structure is fully compliant with EASA regulations. The end result - a frozen ATPL(A) - is identical to what an integrated programme delivers. The difference is how you get there.
Modular vs integrated: which is better?
Neither is inherently better. The right choice depends on your circumstances. Integrated training is a full-time commitment: you enter with zero hours and emerge 18–24 months later with a frozen ATPL(A). Modular training achieves the same outcome but lets you spread the work over a longer period.
| Modular | Integrated | |
|---|---|---|
| Pace | Self-directed, flexible scheduling | Fixed full-time schedule |
| Cost | Pay per module as you go | Large upfront payment |
| Flexibility | Train alongside work or study | Requires 18–24 months full-time |
| Timeline | 2–4 years typical | 18–24 months |
| Ideal for | Working professionals, career changers | School leavers, full-time students |
The modular pathway: step by step
A typical modular route from zero to frozen ATPL(A) follows this sequence. Each step is a standalone qualification - valuable on its own and a prerequisite for the next.
Step 1
PPL(A) - Private Pilot Licence
Minimum 45 hours. Learn to fly single-engine aircraft, navigate, and operate safely. This is where every pilot journey begins.
Step 2
Hour Building
Build to 150+ total hours. Fly cross-countries across Europe, gain experience in different conditions and airspaces. The most enjoyable phase of training.
Step 3
ATPL(A) Theory
13 subjects, examined by EASA. Can be studied via distance learning alongside your flying. Covers meteorology, navigation, aircraft systems, flight planning, and more.
Step 4
Instrument Rating (IR(A) / CB-IR(A))
Learn to fly solely by reference to instruments - essential for professional operations and bad-weather flying. Minimum 40 hours instrument time.
Step 5
CPL(A) - Commercial Pilot Licence
The licence that allows you to fly for compensation. Minimum 200 total hours and a skills test. Focuses on precision flying and professional standards.
Step 6
MEP - Multi-Engine Piston Rating
Learn to operate multi-engine aircraft. Typically 6 hours of training on our Diamond DA42. Required for most commercial operations.
Why train modular at alpaviation?
We specialise in modular training because we believe it produces better pilots. When you have time to absorb each phase before moving to the next, the learning is deeper and more durable.
- —Complete PPL(A) through ATPL(A) entirely in-house - no need to change schools
- —Fleet of 15 aircraft covering every training stage, from Bristell B23 to Diamond DA42
- —One-on-one mentorship with experienced instructors who know your progress
- —EASA-certified ATO (CH.ATO.0147) - PPL/CPL/ATPL are ICAO-aligned and widely convertible; LAPL is EASA-only
- —Train at Bern-Belp Airport with direct access to Alpine and European airspace
Who is modular training for?
Modular training is ideal for working professionals who want to earn a pilot licence without putting their career on hold. It is equally suited to career changers, retirees pursuing a lifelong ambition, or anyone who values flexibility over speed.
Many of our students are business owners, engineers, doctors, and executives who fly one to three times per week and complete their PPL(A) in four to six months. Some continue to CPL(A) and beyond. The pace is entirely yours.
Modular flight training is not a compromise - it is a deliberate choice for people who want to do things properly, at their own pace, with no shortcuts. If that sounds like you, we should talk.
