Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about training, flying, and getting started at alpaviation.
Getting Started
How long does it take to get a Private Pilot Licence?
A PPL(A) typically takes 3 to 6 months depending on your pace of training, weather, and availability. The minimum requirement is 45 flight hours under EASA regulations, though most students complete training in 55–70 hours.
What is the minimum age for pilot training?
You can begin flight training at any age. To solo an aircraft, you must be at least 16. A PPL(A) can be issued from age 17, LAPL(A) from age 16.
Do I need a medical certificate?
Yes. For PPL(A) you need an EASA Class 2 medical certificate. For CPL(A) and ATPL(A), a Class 1 medical is required. We can recommend approved aeromedical examiners in the Bern region.
What is the difference between PPL(A) and LAPL(A)?
The PPL(A) allows you to fly across all EASA states with up to 3 passengers and provides a pathway to instrument ratings and professional licences. The LAPL(A) is limited to aircraft under 2,000 kg MTOW, EASA airspace only, and does not lead to professional certifications. PPL(A) requires 45 flight hours minimum; LAPL(A) requires 30.
Can I train part-time while working?
Absolutely. Our modular training approach is designed for working professionals. You set the pace - evenings, weekends, or intensive blocks. Most of our students train part-time.

What pilot licences does alpaviation offer?
We offer the full EASA range: LAPL(A), PPL(A), CPL(A), ATPL(A), aircraft ratings (MEP, PC-12, PC-6, Cessna SET, Piper M500/600), instrument ratings (IR(A), CB-IR(A)), Night Rating, UPRT, and all instructor certificates (FI, CRI, IRI).
What aircraft will I train on?
Initial training is on the Bristell B23 (glass cockpit, Garmin G3X) or Cessna 172. Advanced training uses the Piper Archer (IFR), Diamond DA42 (twin), Cessna 182 RG, Rockwell Commander, and Cessna P210R. See our Fleet page for full specs.
Do you offer distance learning?
Yes. Ground school theory for PPL(A), LAPL(A), CPL(A), ATPL(A), and IR(A) can be completed via distance learning with a minimum of 10–25 hours of in-person instruction depending on the programme.
How is theory instruction delivered?
Three options: evening courses (2 evenings per week, 3 hours each), weekend intensive courses, or distance learning with in-person sessions. Custom combinations are available.
Do you offer modular or integrated training?
We specialise in modular training, which allows you to complete each certificate at your own pace. This is ideal for professionals who cannot commit to a full-time integrated programme.
What is UPRT and do I need it?
Upset Prevention and Recovery Training is mandatory for ATPL(A), CPL(A), and many type rating candidates under EASA regulations. alpaviation is a FOCA-certified UPRT school.
