Instrument Rating
Instrument flight – also known colloquially as blind flight – is the control of aircraft in which the flight attitude and navigation are controlled exclusively with the aid of instruments on board and with the support of air traffic controllers on the ground, without reference to external visual cues.

Treat yourself to a dose of professionalism when flying

The flight follows certain clearly defined flight rules that differ significantly from visual flight rules (VFR) – the so-called Instrument Flight Rules (IFR). You are part of a highly professional overall system, in principle under the permanent control of a ground control center, in which all scheduled aircraft also operate. In this system, all participants follow clearly defined rules, which makes flying predictable and safe within the defined restrictions and minimums.

Clearly more is possible, but not everything

This training also makes it possible to fly in limited visibility and in clouds – i.e. basically without outward visibility, therefore without ground contact and without the possibility of visually spotting other aircraft. Although instrument flying makes air traffic basically independent of the weather, it does not offer an all-weather ticket. Depending on the aircraft type and equipment, significant weather phenomena such as fog, thunderstorms and icing can also make instrument flight impossible.

Certainly pretty relaxed

Obtaining an instrument rating not only means a significant increase in safety with regard to the weather, but also with regard to the risk of collision, as you are under radar surveillance during the entire flight and are largely separated from other traffic. You get into the air more often and on time, and if you remain sufficiently practiced, this is usually more relaxed, as you always follow the same, familiar and practiced procedures. Especially abroad, where VFR pilots often have to fight their way through complex airspaces, it is pleasant to be able to cruise at your assigned level without having to worry about entering a restricted area. It should also not be underestimated that you gain a nice collateral benefit when you obtain your IFR authorization: you raise your flying knowledge and skills to a higher, more professional level.
